Apollo Brown – Thirty Eight (2014)

cover

“Thirty Eight sounds like Detroit transitioning from Heroin to Crack in the late 70s and early 80s.”

Apollo Brown’s Thirty Eight is a contemporary throwback, inhabiting the realm of reverent reinvention and innovation. It deftly bridges the gap between ’70s Blaxploitation soundtracks (e.g. Curtis Mayfield or Marvin Gaye) and the hip-hop records that sampled from them.

The tracks on Thirty Eight are presented in gritty, heavily saturated Technicolor, the scratches and cigarette burns as purposeful as they are happily accidental. These are suites sounding from long barrels held by lone men lurking in grimy project hallways. Tinged with revenge and regret, shrouded in thick tendrils of hollow-point smoke, the songs have all the makings of an epic gangster tragedy. They’re also great when paired with anything Raymond Chandler.

Crackle and sample hiss run like electric current throughout, charging the record with a retro feel and resonant warmth. Yet these qualities are only secondary to Brown’s impeccable ear for instrumentation. Thirty Eight is full of funk, soul, jazz, blues, hip-hop, and everything in between. The bluesy guitar twang of slow-burner “Black Suits” and the lush, orchestral strings of “The Warning” are just two examples of the depth and diversity Brown brings to the table.

All singing on the album comes in the form of brief samples, some high-pitched and sped up, others left untouched. Taken together, they amount to glimpses of an emotionally affecting narrative, enabling the listener to fill in the plot and words between the booms and baps.

Brown enlists New York mercenary Roc Marciano for the soundtrack’s two features. With the sharpest of eyes and the frostbitten wit of a Polo clad hustler slanging in the dead of winter, Marciano delivers his best verses in recent memory, his vivid narratives perfectly suited for Brown’s soulful production.

Each CD comes packaged with 5″ inch vinyl featuring the aforementioned Roc Marciano tracks. Quite possibly the first time a CD and 5″ inch record have ever been sold together, cop yours before they’re gone. For fans who desire the full analog experience, we’ve pressed up 180-gram vinyl. Each vinyl copy also includes a 45 featuring two bonus instrumentals.

Whether you buy a physical copy or download Thirty Eight digitally, don’t call it a beat tape. With this project Brown has created an expansive cinematic composition for the theatre of your mind. Listen, envision, and enjoy the show.

Souls Of Mischief – Montezuma’s Revenge Instrumentals [2009]

3770075838062707005
Montezuma’s Revenge was created the old-fashioned way, with the MCs A-Plus, Phesto, Opio & Tajai – and producers Prince Paul & Domino – in the lab together from the beginning to the end of the recording process. “We rented a house” explains Opio. “Prince Paul came out, we had no distractions, we just did music every day. ” “It was cool” adds Tajai. “He had concepts, and its good to have an outside perspective – it was a great process.” The result is a cohesive, creative Hip Hop album, the kind of project you d expect from veterans like Souls of Mischief under the auspices of a genius producer like Prince Paul. Souls first encountered Prince Paul while touring with A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul back in the day. But it was on a more recent tour with Handsome Boy Modeling School that the seeds of this collaboration were planted. So what exactly is Montezuma’s Revenge? Tajai comments, “We recorded the album on Montezuma Street.” The final product features 18 tracks of the quality Hip Hop you ve come to expect from Hieroglyphics, with cover art by esteemed illustrator Steve Lopez (famous for his illustrations of Erykah Badu and others). Of course there s more to the title than the location of the recording, Tajai says “The deeper meaning is this album will make you cr@p yourself.”

Souls of Mischief – 93 Still (Gummy Soul Instrumentals)

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of 93 ‘Til Infinity, Souls of Mischief graciously opened their vaults to give Gummy Soul the exclusive acapellas of their classic album, to remix for the first time ever.

As the framework of the project, Gummy Soul’s Wally Clark, dug through his extensive record collection, and gathered all of the songs that were sampled to make hip-hop in 1993. Jazz, Funk and Soul songs, used to create classics from Digable Planets, Snoop Dogg and Black Moon, were then re-contextualized to provide familiar, yet updated versions of some of hip-hop’s most beloved material.

“I wanted to take all of the records that people used back then, and create new compositions using the same techniques they were using – such as filtered bass lines, classic drum breaks, echo-y horns – to make an album that sounds like it could have been released in 1993,” says Clark. “It was an amazing exercise trying to capture the essence of a sacred time in hip-hop. It also allowed me to playfully use samples that are normally deemed off-limits, because they are too well known.”

Be on the look out for Soul’s of Mischief’s new album “There Is Only Now,” produced by Adrian Younge, as well as the 93 ‘Til documentary, featuring Questlove, Mos Def, 9th Wonder, Pete Rock and more.

Cover

Hailing from Brownsville, Brooklyn, Billy Danze and Lil Fame have solidified their reputation as iconic lyricists through their years of hard-hitting rhymes and unparalleled tenacity. Never compromising their style and having shared the mic with industry greats such as Jay-Z, Jadakiss, Styles P, Guru, ODB, Busta Rhymes, and Redman, just to name a few, the duo has rightfully earned its status as one of the most revered acts in hip-hop today.
In Late July 2011, Billy Danze took to Conspiracy Worldwide Radio to break the news that M.O.P.’s upcoming album will be a collaborative effort with German & Danish production team, the Snowgoons. Speaking on the album, Danze said, “[Snowgoons] just sent us some fire…those dudes are incredible…when you hear this project, you’re going to be satisfied as an M.O.P. fan and a Snowgoons fan.” Ensuring fans around the world that this will be one of their most diverse sounding albums, the Mash Out Posse member went on to praise the Snowgoons, proclaiming, “they’ve got everything…they’re blazing through and coming from different angles. These guys providing us with that dramatic sound, with those theatrical sounds, with that hard hip-hop…they supplied us with everything. I’m really psyched about this project.”

71Raw – Ninja Guidance(Instrumentals)

cover

The hip-hop movement has stormed through almost every place both nationwide and worldwide. And now the time has come for Orange County, California to become a part of hip-hop history. Orange County has undeniable been misrepresented in those popular television shows — and it’s time for 71RAW to show everyone that as much as the bourgeoisie lifestyle exists in the O.C., so does the hip-hop way of life.
71Raw, in which the name is derived from the area code 714, is represented by Anthai, Martial Art, and Broken Tongue. Their history began when they all met in 1996 — Martial Art and Broken Tongue being childhood friends and then meeting Anthai during high school. It was after they met that their interest in emceeing and DJing slowly matured into full-grown, solid passion for creating music. It was in 1999 they first started making music and in 2004, they released their first album, “71Raw Project.” And, as luck (and, with no doubt, their talent) would have it, in 2005, 71Raw got the opportunity to be introduced to some of the Wu-Tang memebers by Christ Bearer of Northstar (Wu-Tang West Coast Killa Beez). Some of those Wu-Tang members include Rza, Method Man, Black Knights, Beretta 9, and Freemurda — just to name a few. So, the journey to work on their second album began that same year.
After three years 71Raw has put together another underground Hip-Hop album entitled “Ninja Guidance,” which was produced 95% by Anthai and 5% by Martial Art. The album is honored to have guest appearances from Wu-Tang affiliated, including Solomon Childs, Beretta 9 (Killarmy), Black Knights, Christ Bearer (Northstar), and Pesha (Blackball Ent.). It was 71Raw’s goal to make an album that would take their fans back to the music of the golden Hip-Hop era that they grew up on: 90’s Hip-Hop! And, “Ninja Guidance” became the end result. Without any phony A&R or any type of management telling them how to make their album, 71Raw had 100% full control of their creativity to make this album raw and rough for their fans. This album will take you back to the days of Blackmoon, Wu-Tang, Jeru The Damaja, and Gangstarr
